The two women who caused a Sunwing flight headed to Cuba to turn back to Toronto Wednesday evening – escorted by two fighter jets – are facing numerous charges.
Milana Muzikante, 26, of Vaughan, and Lilia Ratmanski, 25, of Whitby, have been charged with smoking on an aircraft and endangering the safety of an aircraft.
The two women allegedly consumed a substantial amount of alcohol they purchased in the duty free in the washroom of the airplane, and triggered the smoke alarm with a lit cigarette, according to Janine Chapmam, vice-president of marketing for Sunwing.
She said they also became involved in a physical altercation and threatened the aircraft. The threat was not considered credible given their condition.
They were arrested upon the plane’s return to Pearson International Airport just before 8:30 p.m.
NORAD scrambled the two CF-18 fighter jets out of Bagotville, Que. as a precautionary measure, the organization said in a statement.
Peel Police officer Const. Thomas Ruttan told the Star that the “entire plane erupted into applause when police escorted the women off the plane.”
The two women are scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
